Apply for School 15 January–12 February

You can apply for a school for your child for the autumn term between January 15 and February 12, 2026.

Applying for a school via the e-service

To use the e-service, you must have an e-identification, such as Bank ID or Freja eID. You can make changes to the application at any time during the application period. There is a support guide that helps you use the e-service Search for a school.

Consent when applying

From January 2026, both guardians (if there are two guardians) need to approve the application for school. This means that when a guardian makes an application in the e-service Search for school, the other guardian needs to log in and consent to the application. It is only when both guardians have consented to the application that the application can be processed.

What happens if both guardians do not agree to the application?

If the child has an ongoing or future school placement and both guardians do not agree to the newly registered application, the child will not be assigned a guaranteed placement at a school close to home with vacant places left. The child thus retains his or her current school placement.

Guarantee placement is awarded if

  • The student attends a school that does not offer higher grades for the next academic year
  • The student has just moved to the city of Stockholm and has no school placement
  • The student does not have a school placement for some other reason

Apply for a school via a form

You can use the form below to apply for a school if

  • you or your child do not have a personal identity number
  • you or your child have protected personal data
  • Your child is an overage child who is going to apply for a preschool class
  • your child has had compulsory schooling deferred
  • You do not have e-identification.

Apply to several schools

It is important that you apply to several schools to increase the chance that your child will get a position at a school of your choice. If you do not make an application, the City of Stockholm will place your child in a school close to home that has some vacant place left.

It is good to keep in mind that no students are guaranteed places at a specific school. Therefore, not everyone will get a position at the school they want to attend.

All municipal schools and some independent schools are connected to the City of Stockholm's e-service Search for School. If you apply to one of these, you must use the e-service or a form. Independent schools that are not included in the search service must be contacted yourself.

Decision on school placement

If you have applied via the e-service, you can log in on 25th March, when the decisions on school placement are ready.

If you have not applied for a school at all or applied via a form, a decision on school placement will be sent by post to your child's registered address. It may take a few extra days before it arrives, depending on the postal service's routines for delivery.

If you are not satisfied with the decision on school placement

If you have applied for a school and have not received any of the options you wanted for your child, it is important to know that the desire for a particular school does not mean that your child is entitled to a place there.

You can appeal a decision on school placement if you believe that the education administration has not followed the City of Stockholm's selection criteria in the order of priority. The Education Administration strives to offer a place at the school you as a guardian have wanted for your child as far as possible.

If you are not satisfied with the decision, you can apply for a reserve place.

Appeal a decision on school placement

If you, as a guardian, believe that your child's decision on school placement does not follow the City of Stockholm's selection criteria in the order of priority, you can appeal the decision. The decision on school placement states how to appeal.

It is important to know that an appeal is not the same as a desire to change to a particular school. If you wish to change schools for your child, you need to make a reserve application or apply during the application periods during the current academic year.

How to appeal the decision

If your child has not received any of their desired choices, you can appeal the decision. The appeal must be received by the education administration within three weeks. The three weeks start from the day you received the decision.

To appeal, you must write an email or letter. The appeal must include the following things

  • Which decision do you want to appeal
  • Date of the decision
  • Why you think the decision is wrong
  • the student's name and social security number (personnummer)
  • Guardians' phone numbers for home, mobile and work
  • Guardian's email address
  • If both are guardians, both must sign.

Send an appeal to the Board of Education:

E-mail: utbildningsforvaltningen@edu.stockholm.se

Or by mail:

Utbildningsförvaltningen
Registrator
Box 22049
104 22 Stockholm

The case is handled by the education administration and then forwarded to the School System's Appeals Board for further processing. It is good to know that the School Appeals Board has a processing time of 3–6 months, so it may take time before you receive a decision.
