Applying for a school when the term has started

During certain periods, you can apply for school for your child once the term has started.

If you want to change schools for your child, who has been accepted into an adapted compulsory school, you apply via a form directly to the school. You cannot use the e-service.

You can apply to public schools for your child once the term has started if you

  • recently moved within or to the City of Stockholm and wish to change to a school near your new registered address
  • did not apply for a school for your child during the regular application period 15 January–12 February
  • or for some other reason wish to have another school placement.

You apply during the periods

  • 1 October–15 October with school start 3 November
  • 11 November–5 December with school start 7 January 2026
  • 18 February–25 February with school start 10 March 2026

Applying for a school via the e-service

To use the e-service, you must have an e-identification, such as Bank ID or Freja eID. You can make changes to the application at any time during the application period. There are several support guides to help you use the e-service Search for a school.

Consent when applying

From January 2026, both guardians (if there are two guardians) need to approve the application for school. This means that when a guardian makes an application in the e-service Search for school, the other guardian needs to log in and consent to the application. It is only when both guardians have consented to the application that the application can be processed.

Apply for a school via a form

You can use the form below to apply for a school if

  • you or your child do not have a personal identity number
  • you or your child have protected personal data
  • Your child is an overage child who is going to apply for a preschool class
  • your child has had compulsory schooling deferred
  • You do not have e-identification.

Moved to the City of Stockholm or within the city

Does your child miss school placement or have you moved to or within the city between school change periods?

If you do not have a school placement or are moving to or within the city, you can use the form below and send it directly to the school. If the school does not have vacancies, the school will help to look for a school with vacancies.

Decision on school placement

If you have applied via the e-service, you can log in when a decision on school placement is available. If you have applied via a form, a decision on school placement will be sent by post to your child's registered address. It may take a few extra days before it arrives, depending on the postal service's routines for delivery.

Appeal a decision on school placement

If you, as a guardian, believe that your child's decision on school placement does not follow the City of Stockholm's selection criteria in the order of priority, you can appeal the decision. The decision on school placement states how to appeal.

It is important to know that an appeal is not the same as a desire to change to a particular school. If you wish to change schools for your child, you need to make a reserve application or apply during the application periods during the current academic year.

How to appeal the decision

If your child has not received any of their desired choices, you can appeal the decision. The appeal must be received by the education administration within three weeks. The three weeks start from the day you received the decision.

To appeal, you must write an email or letter. The appeal must include the following things

  • Which decision do you want to appeal
  • Date of the decision
  • Why you think the decision is wrong
  • the student's name and social security number (personnummer)
  • Guardians' phone numbers for home, mobile and work
  • Guardian's email address
  • If both are guardians, both must sign.

Send an appeal to the Board of Education:

E-mail: utbildningsforvaltningen@edu.stockholm.se

Or by mail:

Utbildningsförvaltningen
Registrator
Box 22049
104 22 Stockholm

The case is handled by the education administration and then forwarded to the School System's Appeals Board for further processing. It is good to know that the School Appeals Board has a processing time of 3–6 months, so it may take time before you receive a decision.
