Apply for school – an overview
Here you, as a guardian, can follow all the steps in the process of applying for a school for your child.
1. Before you apply
Before you apply for a school for your child, it is a good idea to read up on the rules that exist for decisions on school placement. Here you can read about the rules that apply.

2. Find a school
There are both municipal and independent compulsory schools and adapted compulsory schools to apply to. Therefore, research well in advance which schools you are interested in.

3. Applying for a school for the next academic year
If you have children who are registered in Stockholm and who
- is starting preschool class
- attend a school that does not have higher grades
- want to change schools.

Consent when applying
From January 2026, both guardians (if there are two guardians) need to approve the application for school. This means that when a guardian makes an application in the e-service Search for school, the other guardian needs to log in and consent to the application. It is only when both guardians have consented to the application that the application can be processed.
Apply for a school via a form
You use the form below to apply for a school if:
- you or your child do not have a personal identity number
- you or your child have protected personal data
- Your child is an overage child who is going to apply for a preschool class
- your child has had compulsory schooling deferred
- You do not have e-identification.

6. Decision on school placement
If you have applied via the e-service, you can log in when a decision on school placement is available. If you have not applied for a school at all or applied via a form, a decision on school placement will be sent by post to your child's registered address. It may take a few extra days before it arrives, depending on the postal service's routines for delivery.
